HISTORY

The City of Hawthorne was founded in 1905 by B.L. Harding and H.D. Lombard.   The city was named after author Nathaniel Hawthorne because Harding's daughter shared a birthday.  The City of Hawthorne is located in Southwestern Los Angeles County. The City of Hawthorne is known as the City of good neighbors.


According to the United States Census Bureau, Hawthorne is 6.8 square miles.  The Census estimates that in 2019 Hawthorne had a population of 86,068. Numbers for the 2020 Census are not available yet.


The City of Good Neighbors has a fair share of celebrities that have lived here, but the most famous are the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys monument is visited by hundreds of tourists every year, located at 3701 W. 119th Street.  Besides The Beach Boys, other notable celebrities that lived in Hawthorne include.


  • Actress Norma Jean also known as Marilyn Monroe lived in Hawthorne unit the age of 6. 
  • Actor Butch Patrick, of TV's The Munsters lived in Hawthorne
  • Founder Jack Northrop, of Northrop Corporation made Hawthorne headquarter of his company
  • Olympic Athlete Jim Thorpe, lived in Hawthorne and has a park named after him
  • Rapper Tyler the Creator, of OFWFKTA grew up in Hawthorne
  • Basketball player Russell Westbrook of the Washington Wizards, grew up in Hawthorne
  • Soccer player Gyasi Zardes of the Columbus Crew SC, grew up in Hawthorne and help sponsor the Futsal courts at the Hawthorne Memorial Center when he played with LA Galaxy.


North Hawthorne is also where you will find the Hawthorne City Hall, Hawthorne Police Station, and the famous Hawthorne Water Tower. 

The city enjoys the convenience of having its own Hawthorne Municipal Airport. Hawthorne is known as the cradle of aerospace, besides Northrop Corporation having had its headquarters here, the city also welcomed Space X.  Elon Musk also has his other two business ventures The Boring Company and Tesla that call North Hawthorne home.
